Easy Carrot + Applesauce Dog Treats {Recipe}
March 7, 2013 by heather
Before I share today’s recipe – I want to mention that yesterday’s post goofed – for some reason it sent out to email subscribers, but never posted to the WordPress reader…. so for anyone who missed it: Chewy Sunbutter Cookies {Nut-free, Grain-free, Lactose-free}. Now, on to treats for our 4-legged friends!!!
Mr.O (aka my alaskan husky) was a bit under the weather yesterday, so I decided he was in need of some treats.
Carrot & Applesauce Dog Treats:
1/2 C pureed carrots (I used a 4 oz. jar of baby food organic carrots)
3/4 C unsweetened applesauce
1 3/4 C whole wheat flour
1/4 C oats
1 tsp honey
optional: 1 tsp cinnamon
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
Stir all ingredients together in a bowl, until well combined.
At this point, I froze half the dough for later, and placed the other half onto a baking sheet.
Using rolling pin, roll dough to about 1/4″ thick.
Using a pizza wheel or knife, cut dough into squares (see photo below).
Bake for ???????? Ooops, don’t hate me, but I forgot to look at the time. I’m guessing 15-20 minutes. You want them to be firm.
UPDATE: Bake 20-25 min. for a more chewy treat, 25-30 min. for a more crunchy treat.
Remove from oven, cool, and break into squares. Depending on how long you baked them they will either be firm and flexible (almost a bit rubbery) or crunchy.
These should be okay at room temperature for a day or two (longer if you made them crunchier), but I suggest storing them in the fridge after that since they are a fairly moist treat. They should last about a week in the fridge – use your judgement here, and keep an eye out for any mold that might form.
Mr. O loved these – give ’em a try and let me know what your pup thought!

I want a pup so I could make this!
:)
These were very good. We also made a batch of pumpkin and apple sauce too. Thank you for the recipe
Yay, I’m so glad they turned out for you! Using pumpkin is a great idea! Thanks for sharing. :)
FYI baby food contains onion and garlic Which is very bad for dogs…this is per my vet that has a degree from John Hopkins School of veterinary. My dog had cancer and I fed her baby food because she was not eating..I was told to stop immediately because the onion and garlic remove the cells needed to fight infections. ..so take the time use canned veggies and mash…do not use baby food.
Kim, thanks for taking time to write. I’m sure SOME baby foods (perhaps the veggie and meat blends/meals) contain onion and garlic. However, all of the baby food applesauce and baby food carrots I have ever seen contain only apples, carrots, water. This recipe is perfectly safe. As with all foods, it is important to read labels. Thanks for being concerned for our furry friends. Happy Holidays :)
My dogs loved these! They were so happy they sat by the stove and waited on them! Quick.. easy and apparently yummy! Thanks
Apologies for the belated reply – but I’m so glad your pups loved the treats! Thanks for taking a moment to share. :)
I made them and I couldn’t roll them out they were to wet them to dry. :( Could you give me some tips for next time. Thanks!
Hi! Sorry for the very delayed reply. I haven’t made these in a very long time as my pup is no longer with me, but I think the trick when rolling out any dough is to make sure you have a decent amount of flour on your work surface to keep it from sticking. Then sprinkle a bit on top of the dough as needed throughout the rolling process, but only a little at a time to keep it from getting too dry. Another thing to mention: measuring flour by cup amounts rather than weight can cause variation (for example, if you lightly spoon your flour into the measuring cup vs. dipping a cup into compacted flour – it can make quite a difference in the amount that’s actually going into the recipe). If I make these again, I’ll make sure to update with the ideal flour weight. I hope they turn out for you on your next try! :)
I made these today for my chihuahua minus the oatmeal because he’s allergic to it he loved them.
That’s so nice to hear! Happy Valentine’s Day to both of you. :)
