Green Velvet, acrylic painting by Heather M. Roberts

I promised bread in my last post… and that’s this weekend’s mission – but in the meantime, I couldn’t help but share a new painting in honor of the first official day of spring!

Lots of cool minty greens in this piece.  Painted in super thin layers on a lightly textured wood panel, giving it an amazing velvet like finish that makes you want to reach out and touch it in the biggest way.  Can’t wait to have prints made.

I promise to take a break from the art bombardment after January is over!  Today though, I want to tell you about an Art Challenge I recently entered on minted.com (a really cool site, check it out if you haven’t!).  Here’s where you come in – anyone can vote in the challenges – and winners will have their work available to purchase on the site.

So, if you are a fan of any or all of my submissions, I’d be super grateful if you’d take a moment to rate my designs (you’ll need to set-up a free account, if you don’t already have one).  I’ve posted photos of my entries below (a click on each photo will take you to the voting page), but have a look around and vote on others while you’re there – tons of great entries.  Voting ends on January 21st.

Wyoming winter landscape

If you live in the US, you’ve probably heard about (or are involuntarily participating in) the latest giant arctic blast.  My travel plans to drive from Montana to Minnesota aligned perfectly with the entire span of the storm system.  Even after waiting it out in a hotel for an extra day, Wyoming roads today were something like a swirly ice rink… overrun by kids who haven’t quite figured out how stop while skating.  I white-knuckled-it for 7 hours.  Thankfully, I absolutely love gazing at snowy, icy, vast, and desolate landscapes.  I pulled over to stretch this afternoon and the sun peeked out – snuck this shot.

Happy Tuesday!

Have you ever stood underneath and looked upward into a big tree that’s blindingly bright with all its colored leaves?

Awe-inspiring, right?

Have you ever gone outside late at night and done the same thing?

I am often out with pup well after dark, and one of the highlights of this week has been standing underneath the tree in my front yard and gazing up.  By day, the tree wears brilliant shades of orange, red and yellow; by night, the leaves are serenely golden and translucent by the light of the moon.  Moments better experienced than photographed.

A strong wind blew in today, and most of the tree’s leaves are swirling near the ground.

Oh autumn, how I love thee.

Apple cider, bonfires, colorful leaves… what are your favorite fall associations?

A haiku written in celebration of Patagonia’s 40th anniversary… but also a personal reminder of so many beautiful mornings spent waking up in the mountains.  If you’re a fan of camping, you most likely know the feeling well – waking up just before sunrise, chill looming in the air, awaiting warm rays of sunshine streaming in to put a positive spin on a new day.

Do you have a favorite sunrise memory?

Back on Earth Day, I mentioned how much I love my Klean Kanteen.  Well, I really do – to the extent that it’s pretty much the only thing I drink out of, and it goes with me EVERYWHERE.  I spend 7-8 hours outdoors each day, and during last week’s sauna-like weather, I was thrilled to have a cold drink ready and waiting thanks to my insulated bottle.  Here’s the scoop:  Klean Kanteen is having a contest, and the above photo was my entry.  Not the best photo technically speaking – but the point was to show your bottle in your everyday environment.  This was a quick snapshot while at work over the weekend.  Late summer prairie scenery… ahhhhh. :)

Coming soon… a recipe for insanely rich chocolate brownies with fresh raspberry filling!
